Val di Fassa for beginners

The area is a welcoming for beginners, with well-groomed nursery slopes and expert instruction set against the stunning backdrop of the Dolomites. The main beginner area is located at the base of the Belvedere gondola, where learners can practise on gentle slopes in a safe, dedicated zone equipped with magic carpets. This area is ideal for first-timers and young children, offering easy terrain to build confidence before progressing further.

For those ready to explore beyond the basics, Canazei provides a good selection of wide blue runs, particularly around the Belvedere and Buffaure areas, all accessible via modern lift systems. The local ski schools are highly regarded and offer both group and private lessons in multiple languages. While the resort forms part of the vast Dolomiti Superski area, beginners can comfortably stay within the local zones, enjoying scenic views and a relaxed pace as they develop their skills.

A local Val di Fassa lift pass is available and recommended for complete beginners only.

Val di Fassa for intermediates

Canazei is ideal for intermediate skiers, offering a fantastic mix of cruisy red runs, scenic descents, and access to one of the most iconic ski circuits in the world – the Sella Ronda. From the top of the Belvedere gondola, skiers can enjoy a variety of well-groomed red pistes with sweeping views over the Dolomites, perfect for building confidence and covering ground.

The real highlight for intermediates is the Sella Ronda circuit, a 40 km loop that links four valleys – Val di Fassa, Val Gardena, Alta Badia, and Arabba – using a mix of lifts and runs. It’s a must-do experience that allows you to ski from resort to resort in a single day, with plenty of mountain huts to stop for lunch along the way. From Canazei, you can access the circuit in either direction and visit renowned resorts like Corvara, Selva Val Gardena, and Arabba, each offering their own unique terrain and atmosphere. With such variety and well-connected slopes, Canazei is a fantastic base for intermediate skiers looking to explore the best of the Dolomites.

Val di Fassa for advanced

Advanced skiers will find plenty to challenge them in and around the resort, with access to steep descents, high-altitude terrain, and some of the Dolomites’ most demanding runs. While the immediate area offers a selection of more technical red and black pistes, the real appeal lies in the resort’s connection to the vast Dolomiti Superski network, opening up endless opportunities for expert-level skiing.

A standout option for seasoned skiers is Arabba, known for its steep, north-facing slopes and more challenging terrain. Easily reached via the Sella Ronda circuit, it's a favourite for those looking to push their skills. For high-altitude adventure, the nearby Marmolada Glacier is a must. Sitting at over 3,200 metres, it offers long, thrilling descents and excellent snow conditions throughout the season. Based in Val di Fassa, advanced skiers can enjoy a varied and demanding experience, with the added bonus of exploring some of the most iconic terrain in the Dolomites.

Freestyle and terrain parks

Sitting directly above Canazei, at the top of the Belvedere Gondola, is a terrain park that will appeal to snowboarders and adventurous skiers alike. If you’re searching for a variety of freestyle and terrain parks, the whole area has an excellent variation and you shouldn’t be afraid to explore further afield.

Where to stay in Val di Fassa

Canazei

As one of the largest villages in the Fassa valley, you won't be short of accommodation to choose from in Canazei. Val di Fassa is famous for Italian hospitality. Delicious restaurants serving local, home-cooked cuisine are in abundance. You can expect a lively après ski scene in and around resort, plus plenty of traditional culture and history in the area. The location couldn't be more perfect as the village is situated just below a forest of snow-covered trees and above that is the towering peaks of the almighty Dolomites. In the centre of the village, the Belvedere gondola is the gateway to the famous Sella circuit.

The closest hamlet just down the road is Alba, sat at the foot of the Marmolada and Sella. Here you will find the Col dei Rossi cable car which links directly onto the Sellaronda, so very convenient for the diehard skier.

Slightly further along the valley is Penia, a small but stunning area which is a suntrap for bluebird days. Between the two areas is the Ciampac 10-seater cable car which at the top has some of the most spectacular views of the Colac area. This is a quiet paradise for intermediate and advanced skiers with runs heading out towards the village of Pozza where you can access the quiet slopes of Rosengarten. Penia has access to the Sellaronda circuit too by the Col di Rossi cable car located between Alba and Penia.

The last village to mention is nestled in the middle of the valley, Campitello, sitting to the west of Canazei, is perfect for those looking for a traditional and more relaxed location with direct access onto the mountain via the Col Rodella cable car.
