Why ski in Jungfrau Ski Area

If scenery and ski legends alone were the deciding factor in choosing a skiing area, it’s hard to imagine a more stunning or historic arena as this classic region in the Bernese Oberland. Just the names of the resorts speak volumes. On one side of the Lauterbrunnen Valley, Wengen and Grindelwald are joined at the hip by lifts and mountain railway, with the truly stunning mountain backdrop of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Across the valley, the atmospheric village of Mürren clings to a high mountain shelf, overlooking the same valley in reverse, with inspirational but more distant views of the Jungfrau and Mönch.

Placed at the 'top of Europe', ski the high alpine slopes in the Jungfrau Region. This ski area offers you everything you'll need for a snow sports holiday including gentle slopes, steep drops, snow and fun parks, racing tracks and off-piste opportunities. The brand new Schilthorn cable car up is well worth the visit if you are staying in Wengen or Grindelwald- it's the world's steepest cable car connecting Stechelberg to the Schilthorn summit. Once at the top you can enjoy panoramic mountain views and incredible skiing in Mürren. The Jungfrau region is also well equipped with routes for passionate winter hikers, so if you'd prefer to explore these mountains on foot, there'll be many opportunities to do so. A firm favourite, and one of the most beautiful, is the hike from Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg, where you'll get clear, unforgettable views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau peaks.

Things to do in Jungfrau

Sledding

Wengen has a range of picturesque sledging routes, with one of the most popular being the 4.5km track that descends from the Männlichen top station to the village. Another great sledding spot is Kleine Scheidegg, where you can race down the Fox Run, located next to the Lauberhorn race course. For those seeking the longest sledging adventure, a trip to Grindelwald is a must. You can experience the thrilling Big Pintenfritz, a 15km run starting at Faulhorn and winding its way down to Grindelwald.

Snowshoe

With around 100 kilometres of well-marked hiking trails across the Jungfrau region, you wont have to walk the same trail twice. There are a number of trails around Wengen, however we recommend heading up to Kleine Scheidegg where there is a variety of trails to suit different levels. Be sure to pre-book your non-skiers walking pass before you travel.

The artificial ice rink in Grindelwald is open throughout the winter season, also located at the Sportzentrum and is a great activity for all the family. Alternately compete in a game of curling and test your ability to hit the target.

Swap your skis or board for a toboggan and head down the longest sledding run in the world -Big Pintenfritz . The run is only accessible by foot, catch the gondola up to First,  follow the signposts to Bachalpsee and further up to the Faulhorn on this 2.5hr long walk, to be rewarded with a 15km descent into the valley.

If you don't fancy hiking head up the Männlichen cableway where you can sledge down to the village if the snow conditions are good enough.

Schilthorn Gondola

The brand new Schilthorn cable car is one of the most spectacular cable car journeys in the Swiss Alps. It connects the village of Stechelberg, deep in the Lauterbrunnen Valley, with the summit of the Schilthorn (2,970 metres), passing through the mountain villages of Gimmelwald, Mürren, and Birg along the way. The cableway has an impressive gradient of 159.4 percent - climbing 775 metres in just four minutes.

This cable car route includes some of the steepest ascents in Switzerland, particularly on the final section between Birg and Schilthorn, where passengers are lifted swiftly up sheer rock faces to reach the summit station. The journey is divided into four dramatic sections and offers panoramic views of snow covered peaks, deep valleys, and cliffside villages.

Once at the top, the summit of Schilthorn, offers panoramic views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. You may also recognise the revolving Piz Gloria restaurant, made famous by the James Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

Curling

Swap your skis or board for a pair of skates and enjoy skating around the artificial ice rink at the Alpines Sportzentrum, alternatively have a go at curling and see if you can win the game.
