Beginners skiing in Mürren

There are nursery slopes in the village for the first time skiers and boarders. Once you have gained more confidence, there is some nice easy runs in the Allmenhubel, a secluded quieter area, accessible by funicular. 

Intermediates skiing in Mürren

The Murren-Schilthorn area has plenty of blues and red runs to start the day. Once you have warmed up your legs head down Red 3, which follows the Inferno track down to Lauterbrunnen. From here take the Jungfraubahn up to Wengen where you have access to the wider ski area, head over to the Kleine Scheidegg and Männlichen areas for long red runs.

Advanced skiing in Mürren

The Schilthorn has some great black runs heading back towards the village, confident skiers should head down slope 9 (Direttissima), which is the steepest slope in the Jungfrau area with a gradient of 88%. Have your moment on the famous 15km 'Inferno' piste which takes you all the way down to Lauterbrunnen, conditions permitting. If you are up for a challenge head down the two kilometre descent down the ''Black Rock'' from the Eiger Glacier in Grindelwald - the route follows dark rock formations, with steep gradients, rapid turns and challenging passages. 

Snowboarding in Mürren

Experienced snowboarders will enjoy the extensive off piste opportunities, there are some challenging trails down from the Schiltgrat ridge dropping down into the Blumental bowl.

Discover Mürren

Often referred to as the cradle of Alpine skiing, Mürren is one of Europe’s most historic winter destinations. Perched high above the Lauterbrunnen Valley on a dramatic terrace opposite Wengen, this idyllic, traffic-free village offers a peaceful alternative to the busier resorts. Mürren is only accessible by cable car, making it a true mountain retreat. 

James Bond fans might recognise the ski area as it featured in the film 'On Her Majestys Secret Service. The revolving restaurant, Piz Gloria, located at the top of the Schilthorn - Europes steepest cable car, famously featured as the mountaintop hideout of the villain Blofeld.

The resort has its own ‘Mürren-Schilthorn’ ski area with around 54 kilometres of slopes, it's the highest ski area in the Bernese Oberland. While Mürren is ideal for more experienced skiers and snowboarders due to its challenging runs, slopes are available for all skill levels. Beginners can take the funicular up to Allmendhubel, where you'll find a variety of nursery slopes.

For more experienced skiers, the Schiltgrat offers a great selection of runs for all levels. Advanced skiers and snowboarders will love the thrill of Slope 9 Direttissima, the steepest slope in the Jungfrau! You have access the wonderful Jungfrau Ski Region, surrounded by the dramatic backdrop of the Eiger, Jungfrau and Mönch - a visit to the Jungfrau is not complete without a visit to the Top of Europe - tour the Ice Palace, learn about the history of the railway or take in the panoramic views of the Swiss Alps. 

Non-skiers can take advantage of the excellent winter walking and sledging with the non-skiers’ lift pass. If you are looking for somewhere to meet for lunch at the Panoramic Restaurant Allmendhubel is a great choice - the non skiers can get the funicular up, while the skiers and boarders can ski up to the restaurant.

Mürren has a range of restaurants both on and off the mountain, serving traditional regional classics such as fondue, raclette and rösti. High up in the mountains Bistro Birg serves hearty alpine dishes with amazing views of over the mountain peaks, it is a lovely spot to soak up some winter sun.

Once the slopes are closed for the day, Murren is far more sedate than some of the surrounding resorts. Whilst you are on the mountain make the most of the winter sun on one of the sun terraces dotted around.

Once back in resort, the majority of bars are within the hotels lining the street. If you are after a bit of nightlife, head to the only nightclub in the resort. Bliemlichäller located in the basement of the Hotel Blumental to dance the night away. 

If you fancy a day off the slopes the Alpine Spa is the perfect place to relax. Within the spa area you have access to a range of saunas, a steam bath, plunge pool and the swimming pool among other relaxation areas. Entry is reduced with a guest card issued by your hotel.

There is a Co-Op grocery store and a handful of sport shops and souvenir shops selling regional produce dotted around the village. 

Equipment rental and sports shops are typically open until late in the day so you can maximise your time on the mountain before returning your equipment at the end of your last day. 

The Inferno Downhill race is held annually in Mürren, it is the largest amateur downhill ski race where people race down the Lauterbrunnen valley. Expected dates for the races are between the end of January.

Leave the Lauberhorn races for the professionals, the run challenges professional skiiers speeding down the longest World Cup downhill run. The Lauberhorn races are held in mid-January in Wengen. The Super Combined is held on Friday, the Downhill on Saturday and the Slalom on Sunday.

Development on the brand new Schilthorn cable car had taken place over the 2024/25 winter season; the brand new lift takes you up to the summit in less than 20 minutes and now holds the title of the world's steepest cable car with a gradient of 159.4%. The spectacular lift provides a direct link between the valley station in Stechelberg and the village of Mürren, taking you up to the summit of the Schilthorn via Birg. Once at the top you can enjoy incredible panoramic views of the Bernese Oberland and tasty regional dishes at the Piz Gloria restaurant. 

Travel to Mürren

Travel by air

Flights to Geneva and Zurich depart on Saturdays between 20 December 2025 and 21 March 2026.

Transfer time:

  • Geneva airport: approx. 2 hours 45 mins by coach or 3 hours 30 mins by train.
  • Zurich airport: approx. 3 hours 30 mins by train.

The journey departs from and returns to London St Pancras on Saturdays.

Trains are from London St Pancras to Lauterbrunnen via Paris, Zurich, Interlaken and Lauterbrunnen. From Lauterbrunnen there is a short cable-car ride up to Mürren.

Coach Transfers

Coach transfers from Geneva Airport to Mürren take approximately 2 hours 45 minutes. As Mürren is a car-free resort, the coach will bring you as far as Lauterbrunnen where you will take a quick cable car ride up to Grütschalp. From Grütschalp it's just ten minutes on the mountain train up to Mürren.

Train Transfers

Train transfers from Zürich or Geneva Airport to Mürren take approximately 3.5-4 hours and typically have four changes. The train stations at both Geneva and Zürich Airports are a short walk from Arrivals.

Tickets will be sent by our UK Operations team or your travel agent at least 48 hours before departure and are valid for any train on your travel day. You can find timetables and real-time travel information on the SBB website or the SBB app.

Things to do in Murren

Schilthorn Gondola

The brand new Schilthorn cable car is one of the most spectacular cable car journeys in the Swiss Alps. It connects the village of Stechelberg, deep in the Lauterbrunnen Valley, with the summit of the Schilthorn (2,970 metres), passing through the mountain villages of Gimmelwald, Mürren, and Birg along the way. The cableway has an impressive gradient of 159.4 percent - climbing 775 metres in just four minutes.

This cable car route includes some of the steepest ascents in Switzerland, particularly on the final section between Birg and Schilthorn, where passengers are lifted swiftly up sheer rock faces to reach the summit station. The journey is divided into four dramatic sections and offers panoramic views of snow covered peaks, deep valleys, and cliffside villages.

Once at the top, the summit of Schilthorn, offers panoramic views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. You may also recognise the revolving Piz Gloria restaurant, made famous by the James Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

Curling

Swap your skis or board for a pair of skates and enjoy skating around the artificial ice rink at the Alpines Sportzentrum, alternatively have a go at curling and see if you can win the game.

Paragliding

Soar above the snow-dusted peaks of the Jungfrau with a winter paragliding flight from Mürren. Launching from a snowy slope near Mürren, you’ll take off with a qualified pilot and gently lift into the sky. You'll glide silently through crisp mountain air alongside the towering Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, while frozen waterfalls and deep pine forests stretch out in every direction.

Head up to the 'Top of Europe' at the UNESCO heritage site of the Jungfraujoch and Aletsch Glacier, located at an impressive  3,454 metres, for incredible views across the region. Whilst you are up there, make sure to check out the Ice Palace where there is a variety of ice sculptures to marvel at.
