Discover Grindelwald

Grindelwald is Mecca for fans of all winter pursuits, with immaculately groomed pistes, prepared hiking paths, sled runs and even zip lines included in the area pass - thrill seekers will love the First Flyer and Glider zip lines. The village is in a pretty spectacular location in the valley, beneath the towering north face of the Eiger, surrounded by mountains. Access to the large ski area of the Jungfrau region couldn't be easer using the excellent network of mountain trains, buses and cable-cars. You'll be carving your way around the three linked ski areas in no time: Grindelwald-First, Grindelwald-Wengen and Mürren-Schilthorn. You can even tackle the challenging Lauberhorn race ru, have lunch in Wengen, and still be home in time for tea.

Our flexible short ski breaks in Switzerland have you covered! Hit the slopes for as long or as short as you like. Design your perfect Swiss ski getaway! Choose your duration, departure day, hotel, and resort. Fly from your preferred airport and customize your trip with extras like ski hire and lift passes.

The choice is yours, flexible durations available in 10 resorts and 34 hotels across Switzerland.

There are lots of restaurants to choose from in Grindelwald as well as mountain lodges to stop off at for lunch on the slopes. In town you'll find everything from traditional Swiss raclette to authentic Indian food. In the centre for town you'll be sure to find a great atmosphere, bar's with terraces to enjoy a drink in the sun and even a little après.

Up on the Eigergletscher, a brand new bar with it's own gin disterllery has opened for this winter. The Wall has a show distillery where you can you watch how the exclusive Rugen Distillery gin is made, before relaxing on the sun terrace over looking the mountains and nearby ski slopes. A special feature is that the gin flows over a stone which comes from the Eiger.

Whilst Switzerland is not renowned for its après scene, there are plenty of cosy mountain huts dotted around to enjoy a drink. In the resort itself there are a number of bars to relax after a day on the slopes. The Avocado Bar is a lively after skiing bar - throughout the winter season there is often a DJ or live music creating a great atmosphere.

Up on the Eiger Glacier, you can enjoy a drink on the sun terrace or watch how the exclusive Rugen Distillery gin is produced - a unique feature of the Rugen Distillery gin is that it runs over a rock crystal that comes from the Eiger.

There are lots of shops selling souvenirs and postcards so you can remember your holiday in the Jungfrau. There are also plenty of supermarkets dotted around Grindelwald for groceries and essentials.

There are excellent train links to the surrounding areas including Lauterbrunnen, The Jungfraujoch 'Top of Europe' and Thun for a day of sightseeing off the slopes.

Investments into the modern lift network has made getting around even easier from the Grindelwald Terminal station. The Eiger Express gets you to the glacier in record time and links up to the railway to take you up to the Jungfrau - Top of Europe (payable locally). While the Männlichen gondola leads to a network of some of the longest cruisy runs in the region and access to the Kleine Scheidegg and Wengen ski area areas. We'd still recommend travelling the more traditional way on the scenic cog railway, especially if you're heading for some high altitude skiing from the Schiltorn in Mürren.

Development on the brand new Schilthorn cable car had taken place over the 2024/25 winter season; the brand new lift takes you up to the summit in less than 20 minutes and now holds the title of the world's steepest cable car with a gradient of 159.4%. The spectacular lift provides a direct link between the valley station in Stechelberg and the village of Mürren, taking you up to the summit of the Schilthorn via Birg. Once at the top you can enjoy incredible panoramic views of the Bernese Oberland and tasty regional dishes at the Piz Gloria restaurant.

The run is only accessible by foot, catch the gondola up to First,  follow the signposts to Bachalpsee and further up to the Faulhorn on this 2.5hr long walk, to be rewarded with a 15km descent into the valley.

If you don't fancy hiking head up the Männlichen cableway where you can sledge down to the village if the snow conditions are good enough.

There is a superb network of winter walking trails with wonderful views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains. Catch the gondola up to First and follow the trail to the Gummihütte, the trail rolls along gently until reaching Lake Bachalp, where you will be met with impressive views of the Wetterhorn, Schreckhorn and Finsteraarhorn.

The ‘First Flyer’ is a unique activity which is basically a giant 800 metre zip wire spanning from First to Schreckfeld. Whizz down at speeds reaching 84 kilometres per hour – making for an exhilarating and scenic ride.

Schilthorn

The brand new Schilthorn cable car is one of the most spectacular cable car journeys in the Swiss Alps. It connects the village of Stechelberg, deep in the Lauterbrunnen Valley, with the summit of the Schilthorn (2,970 metres), passing through the mountain villages of Gimmelwald, Mürren, and Birg along the way. The cableway has an impressive gradient of 159.4 percent - climbing 775 metres in just four minutes.

This cable car route includes some of the steepest ascents in Switzerland, particularly on the final section between Birg and Schilthorn, where passengers are lifted swiftly up sheer rock faces to reach the summit station. The journey is divided into four dramatic sections and offers panoramic views of snow covered peaks, deep valleys, and cliffside villages.

Once at the top, the summit of Schilthorn, offers panoramic views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. You may also recognise the revolving Piz Gloria restaurant, made famous by the James Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service.
