More about Grindelwald

Things to do in Grindelwald

Head up to the 'Top of Europe' at the UNESCO heritage site of the Jungfraujoch and Aletsch Glacier, located at an impressive  3,454 metres, for incredible views across the region. Whilst you are up there, make sure to check out the Ice Palace where there is a variety of ice sculptures to marvel at.

The Sportzentrum will keep you occupied when the snow is just too heavy to ski. Give your ski legs a break and go for a swim at the Sportzentrum. There is a swimming pool, a baby pool, spring board, waterslide and a wellness area with a range of facilities. Alternatively have a go at the indoor rope park where there are a number of challenges to undertake.  Guest with a hotel guest card can receive discounted entry to the sports centre.

The artificial ice rink in Grindelwald is open throughout the winter season, also located at the Sportzentrum and is a great activity for all the family. Alternately compete in a game of curling and test your ability to hit the target.

Swap your skis or board for a toboggan and head down the longest sledding run in the world -Big Pintenfritz . The run is only accessible by foot, catch the gondola up to First,  follow the signposts to Bachalpsee and further up to the Faulhorn on this 2.5hr long walk, to be rewarded with a 15km descent into the valley.

If you don't fancy hiking head up the Männlichen cableway where you can sledge down to the village if the snow conditions are good enough.

There is a superb network of winter walking trails with wonderful views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains. Catch the gondola up to First and follow the trail to the Gummihütte, the trail rolls along gently until reaching Lake Bachalp, where you will be met with impressive views of the Wetterhorn, Schreckhorn and Finsteraarhorn.

The ‘First Flyer’ is a unique activity which is basically a giant 800 metre zip wire spanning from First to Schreckfeld. Whizz down at speeds reaching 84 kilometres per hour – making for an exhilarating and scenic ride.

Schilthorn

The brand new Schilthorn cable car is one of the most spectacular cable car journeys in the Swiss Alps. It connects the village of Stechelberg, deep in the Lauterbrunnen Valley, with the summit of the Schilthorn (2,970 metres), passing through the mountain villages of Gimmelwald, Mürren, and Birg along the way. The cableway has an impressive gradient of 159.4 percent - climbing 775 metres in just four minutes.

This cable car route includes some of the steepest ascents in Switzerland, particularly on the final section between Birg and Schilthorn, where passengers are lifted swiftly up sheer rock faces to reach the summit station. The journey is divided into four dramatic sections and offers panoramic views of snow covered peaks, deep valleys, and cliffside villages.

Once at the top, the summit of Schilthorn, offers panoramic views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. You may also recognise the revolving Piz Gloria restaurant, made famous by the James Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service.
