The local slopes in the Seceda and Alpe di Siusi areas offer wide, confidence-boosting runs and well-maintained nursery slopes, ideal for those just starting out. Dedicated beginner zones and excellent ski schools help new skiers progress at a comfortable pace.

Alpe di Siusi, easily accessed by cable car from the centre of Ortisei, is especially well suited to learners. Its broad, sunny pistes are among the best in the Dolomites for building skills, with minimal crowds and stunning panoramic views to enjoy along the way. For those ready to move beyond the basics, there’s a good selection of long, easy blue runs that offer a smooth transition to intermediate skiing.

Discover Ortisei

Ortisei, the picturesque old community and cultural centre of Val Gardena, can all too easily be overlooked by skiers based in Selva, especially those intent on ticking off as many resorts as they can on the celebrated Sellaronda tour. But they’re missing out on an intriguing and delightful location, packed with fascinating architecture, often with ornate woodcarvings, as well as pretty churches, a charming pedestrian precinct, high-quality shops and good restaurants. They usually speak pretty good English which may be just as well as the main language here is Ladin, an intriguing mix of Latin and a regional Romansch dialect!

Ortisei’s main ski area is at Alpe di Siusi, a wonderfully scenic area with a good network of lifts in the Punta d’Oro area, serving early intermediates. There are also gondola and funicular links with the Seceda area which itself links with St Christina and onwards to the extensive Selva lift network which includes Dantercepies, Ciampinoi, Plan De Gralba and Passo Sella. From Selva you also have access to the renowned Sella Ronda ski circuit, a 27km route around the incredible Gruppo Sella massif.

Italy is known for its great food and drink, and staying in Ortisei is no different. There are a variety of restaurants in town serving traditional Ladino food - hearty Alpine dishes which will keep you fueled for a day on the slopes, this often includes barley soup, goulash, Kaiserschmarrn (chopped pancakes) and Spätzle. When aperitivo time rolls around try the Tyrolean Speck, a form of smoked prosciutto with the Schüttelbrot a crispbread from the Tyrol - it pairs nicely with an Aperol Spritz.

Up on the mountain, warm and welcoming mountain huts and chic alpine lodges serve up hearty local dishes alongside stunning views of the Dolomiti mountains. Val d'Anna on the La Longia slope serves hearty Italian and Tyrolean dishes, it's a lovely spot to watch the world go by while enjoying a lunch in the sun.

The apres scene in Ortisei is relatively relaxed, you can find an array of wine bars and cafe-bars dotted around the village, perfect for unwinding after a day on the slopes.

On the slopes there are some lovely spots to enjoy a drink before heading back down to Ortisei. If you are up in Seceda check out Restaurant Seceda for wonderful views of the valley, or on the final run down La Longia - Val d'Anna is a lovely spot with friendly staff and is the ideal location to watch the last skiers head down. If you are returning from a day of exploring the Sella Ronda, Ruacia in St Christina is a lively outdoor bar at the base of the Saslong slopes. For those looking to dance the night away, Siglu bar is the places to be.

Enjoy an afternoon in the Mardolomit pool and spa (pay locally). For children there's two children's pools, an adventure slide and an outdoor pool with water bubbles, which is also accessible in winter. For the grownups, there's a lovely spa area with a whirlpool, and eleven different saunas to choose from.

Guests staying at the Adler Spa Resort Dolomiti can make the most of the lovely state of the art spa with indoor and outdoor pools, whirlpool, salt pool and a range of sauna and steam rooms.

The high street has a selection of designer and winter sport shops, as well as wood carving artisan shops, local Ladino craft, perfect for picking up a souvenir to remember your stay in Ortisei.
