Obertauern has the best snow in Salzburgerland and is suitable for all levels and mixed ability groups. There’s a well linked circuit, almost entirely above the treeline on both sides of the Tauern pass valley, surrounded by the spectacular peaks of the Radstädter Tauern. Obertauern itself offers 100km of high altitude slopes while nearby Mauterndorf adds a further 50km of slopes. A free 20 minutes ski bus ride connects the two resorts.

Beginner skiing in Obertauern

The nursery slopes and the ski school are conveniently situated directly beside the village. The green circuit with 7 lifts including the main 'Zehnerkar' cable-car gives access to wonderful open slopes to help the beginner and second time skiers' confidence. 

Intermediate skiing in Obertauern

The red circuit with 9 lifts contains a vast amount of blue and red runs; the higher up you go, the harder the runs get. 

Obertauern has 100 kilometres of slopes suitable for all abilities, and with the addition of the nearby Mauterndorf ski area, there are a further 50 kilometres of piste and 9 more lifts are available to Obertauern lift pass holders. A free 20 minutes ski bus ride connects the two resorts.

There are numerous off-piste possibilities plus challenging black runs with moguls to satisfy the most demanding skier.

Obertauern is Austria's only purpose built ski resort which means you can ski in, ski out from almost all hotels. With one of the longest seasons in the Alps winter lasts until early May, you can expect high altitude skiing from 1,740 metres to 2,526 metres,

With high-altitude queue-free skiing, traditional Austrian après-ski and ski in, ski out hotels, Obertauern is a real treasure in the Salzburg ski region, deservedly gaining in popularity with British guests.

Obertauern offers a variety of dining spots, from cosy mountain huts to stylish town restaurants.

On the slopes, Kringsalm delivers hearty Tiroler Gröstel and dumplings with sun terrace views while Gasthaus Flubachalm (aka ‘Flu’) charms with homemade cheese‑dumpling soup. Lürzer Alm ticks all the boxes for après‑ski energy, serving schnitzel, burgers and dance floor fun.

In town, The Lazy Flamingo offers 60s‑style burgers and wraps, and Peakini Klubhaus impresses with gourmet burgers and inventive sharing plates. For fine dining, Momenti at Kesselspitze serves six‑course menus, light lunch buffets and a fine wine list.

Obertauern is renowned for its vibrant après-ski, there are plenty of lively huts dotted around the mountain and even more so at the bottom of the slopes. 

Edelweissalm is a popular choice, with après-ski starting at 3pm and continuing into the evening with a DJ and dancing. After skiing, the party continues in the Mundwerk Bar which often has live music or DJ sets. 

When you return from a day on the slopes, many of the hotels in Obertauern have their own wellness facilities.

The modern Obertauern Places Hotel has an impressive spa area with a indoor freshwater pool, whirlpool zone, multiple saunas and relaxation area with a fireplace and vitality bar.

The Hotel Steiner has a 1,000m² adults-only spa area with an indoor to outdoor infinity pool, and a weekly activity and relaxation programme.

The 4* Superior Hotel Kesselspitze offers a wonderful 80m² indoor freshwater pool and multiple saunas and relaxation areas.

The Valamar Obertauern Hotel has recently extended its already impressive wellness facilities to add a 88m² indoor, outdoor pool. You can enjoy the fresh mountain air from the heated pool or explore the rest of the 770m² Balance Spa.

Snowshoeing in Obertauern offers a magical winter experience for nature lovers. Visitors can explore scenic trails from the Gnadenalm to the Südwiener Hütte and from the Hundsfeld slope to the World Cup slope. These trails are suitable for all ages, making it a perfect activity for families.

Wrapped in warm blankets and surrounded by stunning alpine scenery, you can enjoy a scenic horse drawn sleigh ride through the winding forest trails and open meadows covered in snow, and enjoy the serene beauty of Obertauern. Sleigh rides are available between 11am and 9pm. 

Just outside Obertauern, the popular Gnadenalm toboggan run offers winter fun for all ages. This 1.5km track begins and ends at the cosy Gnadenalm mountain hut, making it easy to enjoy a full day of sledding. The fun doesn’t stop when the sun goes down—the slope is illuminated every evening, so you can toboggan well into the night. For added convenience, a Skidoo toboggan taxi is available to take you and your sled to the top. 

An excursion from Obertauern to Salzburg offers a delightful day trip filled with cultural and historical experiences. The journey takes approximately 2 hours by car or bus, making it easily accessible. In Salzburg, visitors can explore iconic attractions such as Hohenwerfen Castle, the Hallein Salt Mine, and the picturesque town of Sankt Johann im Pongau. Surrounded by stunning mountain views, the natural ice skating rink at Gnadenalm offers a picturesque setting for skating and curling. Ice skate and curling equipment rentals are available on-site, making it convenient for you to enjoy these winter activities.

Experience the thrill of snow kiting in Obertauern, where the wind propels you across vast snowy fields, offering an exhilarating blend of skiing or snowboarding with kite-powered speed and lift. The Snowkiteschule Obertauern provides courses for all skill levels at its extensive snow kiting area, making it accessible for both beginners and experienced winter sports enthusiasts.

Swap your skis for a snow bike and enjoy whizzing down the pistes. Snow biking uses a specially adapted bike fitted with skis in place of wheels, letting you glide smoothly down snowy slopes. It’s a fun and easy-to-learn activity. The Schischule Koch provides courses, guided tours, and a unique moonlight tour. Book and pay locally.

Experience skiing under the stars on the illuminated Edelweissbahn slope. Every Monday and Thursday from 7pm till 10pm, you can enjoy the stunning night views of Obertauern as you descend the 1.5km floodlit slopes. All lift tickets from the Obertauern and Lungo-Skipool that are valid for minimum of 1 ½ days can be used.
