Information on ski hire

Getting all your ski equipment sorted for your ski holiday can be a daunting prospect. Fortunately, by pre-booking your equipment with Inghams, our in resort representatives will organise everything in advance for you, have your vouchers ready on arrival, and guide you towards your hire shop. Travel to the slopes with ease this winter and pre-book your ski hire with Inghams.

Ski hire categories

Ski hire shops offer up to three categories of skis and boots for you to choose from: blue, red and black. Although skis may vary from resort to resort, below is a basic guide to the different categories:

  • The blue category is ideal for beginner to early intermediate skiers as they tend to be more flexible and easier to turn.
  • The red category is a carving ski suitable for all keen intermediate skiers. These skis are more rigid, offering more stability and less shake when turning and at higher speeds. These skis are usually only one season old or new this winter.
  • The black category is normally the highest grade of ski available to hire. These are carving skis, generally this season's new models, and are suitable for good intermediate/advanced skiers who can benefit from the higher technical specifications of this ski.

For snowboard hire and children’s ski hire, most resorts will offer just one category. This is usually labelled as red or "standard" equipment hire.

How to pre-book your ski hire

  • Pre-booking your ski hire through Inghams couldn’t be easier. You can add ski hire onto your holiday at the time of booking or by using our Manage My Booking portal at a later date.
  • You can pre-book ski hire at any point up to 3 days before your holiday. Please be aware that ski hire prices can fluctuate and may change from the time of your original booking. For up-to-date ski hire prices in your resort, take a look at the Ski Extras tab on individual resort pages.
  • If you can’t find equipment hire with Inghams that meets your needs, such as a different number of days on the mountains, you can also book with our in resort representatives when you arrive in resort. We offer all local hire at the same price as the ski hire shop.

Hiring helmets

  • We recommend wearing a helmet when skiing and snowboarding on the mountain. Helmets can be rented at a supplement in all resorts.
  • Helmet hire is especially important for children. In Italy (up to and including 13 years old), Slovenia (up to and including 14 years old) and parts of Austria (up to and including 15 years old) it is compulsory for children to wear a helmet on the slopes.
  • Children receive free helmet hire when renting equipment in selected resorts in Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland (see individual resort pages for details). And children under 6 years old in Lapland and up to 11 years old in Andorra, receive free helmets when renting with a full paying adult.

Please note:

  • Your ski extras are bound by Inghams terms and conditions. The ski extra service is provided by a third party supplier and does not form part of your holiday package.

Ski essentials FAQ's

Some resorts have free lifts for beginners, but these are very short, slow lifts scattered across the base of the mountain and only access green runs. If you want to advance beyond the beginner lifts, you will need a lift pass.

If this is your first time, we advise you not to spent lots of money on brand new equipment. Amongst many reasons, as a beginner you might not fully know whether you’ll prefer skiing or snowboarding, and then you don’t want lots of non-returnable equipment on your hands! It is cheaper, easier and just as fun to rent your equipment in the resort and hand it back at the end of your trip.

You can rent skis, boots and poles for skiers. Boots and snowboards for snowboarders. Helmets are also available to rent and we recommend our guests to take this opportunity. There are three different grades of adult skis/boards available to rent: Blue, Red and Black, as explained in our guide. Check with your insurance policies before you rent the most expensive equipment there is (Black). All is explained in our handy Quick Guide: Ski and snowboard equipment explained (coming soon!).

You can add a ski carriage at time of booking. Booking in advance will help you secure the best possible price. On some flights, ski carriage is limited so we recommend booking as soon as possible. If you are travelling on one of our Jet2 charter flights, you can book ski carriage directly with Jet2 via their website. You will be asked for your Inghams reference number so make sure you have this to hand before booking. It’s important to note that ski carriage will be slightly more expensive when booking via Jet2 and it can only be done 7 days after your booking is confirmed by Inghams.
