Our Star Arctic Northern Lights Discovery packages are a perfect short break for couples and families wanting a holiday surrounded by snowy wilderness, with unique polar activities included. Choose from a 3-night short break (Tuesday to Friday) or a 4-night long weekend (Friday to Tuesday) and enjoy the beauty of untouched Lapland whilst experiencing once-in-a-lifetime excursions. Located in Saariselkä, one of Finland’s northernmost resorts, you’ll be in a prime location for spotting the Northern Lights! Available in January and February - get ready to experience winter like never before!

The Star Arctic is a modern and stylish hotel with spacious Lappish-style suites. Surrounded by snow-covered forests, this exclusive location offers unparalleled panoramic views, ensuring an unforgettable stay.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in the Restaurant Kaunis, located in the main building, just a short walk away from the accommodation.

Each morning, you can enjoy a range of local produce, including a range of hot options and a continental breakfast will also be available.

Dinner includes a three-course evening meal, the menu is influenced by Lappish ingredients, as well as modern cuisine.

Your exciting itinerary

With four exciting Arctic excursions included in your holiday, you'll have the chance to experience the very best of Lapland's natural beauty and culture. English-speaking guides will accompany you on each excursion. Your full excursion itinerary will be provided when you arrive at the Star Arctic Hotel. 

Below you'll find a sample itinerary, days and timings may differ. 

Arrive at Ivalo Airport, where you’ll be met for your transfer to the Star Arctic Hotel in Saariselkä. Upon arrival, you’ll collect your thermal clothing and head to your accommodation, where your room will be ready with a welcome package waiting for you.

5km husky safari 

Enjoy the thrilling experience of driving your own team of Siberian Huskies through the snowy wilderness. These incredible dogs are born to run! In teams of two to three per sled (one driving, the other(s) riding), you'll follow a professional musher along forest trails, soaking up the stunning arctic scenery as you go. After your sled ride, visit the husky farm to meet the dogs, learn about their care, and capture some memorable photos before returning to the hotel to unwind.

Aurora hunting

Those staying 4 nights (5 days) will embark on an unforgettable Aurora hunting adventure with an expert local guide. From the warmth and comfort of a heated minibus, sit back and relax as your driver takes you to the best possible spots for viewing should the magical Northern Lights appear.

Throughout the evening, you’ll make several stops to check the skies, take photos, and enjoy the peace of the arctic wilderness under a blanket of stars. If nature prevails, you’ll witness the Aurora Borealis dancing overhead - a truly unforgettable experience in the far north.

Meet the reindeer

Step into the heart of Sámi culture with a visit to the Star Arctic Wilderness Center, where you’ll be warmly welcomed by a local reindeer herder. Learn about traditional reindeer herding and the Sámi way of life through personal stories passed down through generations.

The highlight of this peaceful arctic experience is meeting the friendly reindeer, and enjoying a relaxing sleigh ride through the snowy pine forest. Each sled accommodates up to two adults and one child, and the ride typically lasts 20-30 minutes, depending on the group.

Afterwards, sit down to a hearty soup lunch, complete with salad, bread, and warm drinks - an ideal way to warm up and reflect on this magical northern tradition.

Felltop snowmobiling

Set off from the iconic Kaunispää felltop on an exciting 2-hour guided snowmobile adventure, surrounded by stunning arctic landscapes. With the chance to explore nearby fells, this is a perfect introduction to snowmobiling—suitable for families and beginners alike.

You’ll ride in pairs per snowmobile (one driver, one passenger), while children and anyone under 140 cm will travel safely in a sleigh pulled by the guide’s snowmobile, accompanied by an adult.

To drive, participants must be at least 18 years old and hold a valid class driving licence recognised in Finland. Don’t forget to bring your licence - it may be checked by staff or local officials.

If you're staying 3 nights (4 days) it's time to say your final farewells to Lapland before your transfer to Ivalo airport for your flight home. Guests staying 4 nights (5 days) will enjoy one of their arctic experiences on day 4 and depart on day 5. 

Star Arctic Northern Lights Discovery Package (minimum age 3 yo) includes a full service – activities, full-board, airport transfers, winter gear and felltop accommodation with breathtaking views for chosen 3-4 nights.

Winter gear includes winter overalls, boots and extra gloves and full board meals consist of breakfast, lunch & 3-course table served set menu dinner at Restaurant Kaunis.

For snowmobiles, all drivers must be 18yrs+ and bring a full, valid photographic driver's licence with them to the excursion.

Children must be aged 12 or above and at least 140cm tall to ride as a passenger on a snowmobile, they must be able to touch the foot rest when sat on the snowmobile. Children under this height or aged 5-11yrs will be towed in a sled or pod (unheated) behind the guide. It is not possible for infants (aged 0-4 years) to take part in this excursion. 

Single riders who have purchased a sharing snowmobile may need to upgrade locally to a single driving snowmobile, if a sharing snowmobile is not available.

For the husky safari, guests must be 18+ and in good physical fitness to drive the husky sled. 

Times and distances are approximate and may vary due to weather and other conditions. In extremely cold temperatures or bad weather conditions excursions may be cancelled at late notice. Prices and supplements are correct at time of publishing but may vary up or down. Correct prices will be advised at the time of booking.

Days and timings of excursions will be confirmed on arrival in resort.

Travel insurance is a condition of booking with us, and you should ensure that your chosen policy covers the activities that you plan to take part in during your holiday. Your policy should provide cover for your own personal and medical expenses, however individual policies will not cover damage to snowmobiles or skidoos and a compulsory excess will be payable directly to the supplier of the snowmobile/skidoo excursion.

Located in the wild, mystical north of Lapland, 260 kilometres above the Arctic Circle, Saariselkä is an exceptionally friendly, uncommercialised resort with a unique frontier atmosphere.
