Walking in Wengen

Walks and hikes

Walking Trails:
500km
Terrain:
Diverse terrain from flat valley floors to towering 4000m peaks of the Jungfrau

Wengen is part of the Jungfrau region, where over 500 kilometers of footpaths crisscross the mountains. The paths that meander through pine forests and meadows from Wengen are a great starting point, heading onwards up to the more challenging trails beneath the mighty glaciers. The famous Eiger Trail, which traverses the base of the iconic north face of the Eiger mountain is on many a bucket list or you can easily explore further afield to the Lauterbrunnen valley, chocolate-box mountain villages like Mürren, or Interlaken with its bright turquoise lakes.

The Lieselotte trail sparks an energy boost as you trek your way along the farm-animal themed path in Männlichen. With 13 play stations on route children will find themselves on cloud nine.

Discover the fruit nature trail that will have your family passing through flower fields, secluded woodland and fresh meadows. The Apple Fritter Trail is great for some interactive summer learning, lasting around an hour and a half with a delicious snack awaiting you in the Brandegg restaurant.

A cable car links Wengen to Männlichen, a 2,343-metre mountain that watches over the Lauterbrunnen Valley on one side, and Grindelwald on the other. You can choose to ride inside… or on the open-air balcony on top of the cable car for the "Royal Ride" (just clutch your phone tight while taking a selfie). Many trails can be trodden from the mountaintop, including the Royal Walk to the crown viewpoint, the Treetop Trail and beautifully maintained trails between mountain huts. Come August, alpenhorn aficionados gather to play tunes in full traditional dress.

We’ve included two walks per week (between 26 May - 11 Sep 25) in Wengen and Grindelwald, just for Inghams guests. Join a small group and be led by a professional walking guide on some of their favourite trails. It’s a great way to get to know the area. The walks in Wengen and Grindelwald and are run by Tina Gertsch at Outdoor.

There are three walks to choose from each week and each walk has a limited number of spaces. All walks are available to guests staying in both Grindelwald and Wengen, and you can choose up to two per person, per week. Most walks require the use of public buses/trains and/or mountain lifts which are payable locally. You can add the walks onto your holiday by calling us.

Spaces are limited, so early booking is recommended. Walks depend on weather, guide availability, and group size, and routes may change. Details are provided on arrival, and some may include a small local transport fee. Walks are not suitable for under 12s (under 18s must be with an adult). Please ensure the walk is right for you, our guides have the final say. See our booking conditions for full details.

Our accommodations in Wengen

Discover Wengen

  • Stroll through the picturesque town with views over the Lauterbrunnen valley
  • Hike the famous Eiger Trail beneath the north face of the iconic Eiger Mountain
  • Take the cable car to panoramic views of the mountains in the Jungfrau region

Wengen basks on a sheltered and sunny plateau beneath the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau mountains. Once a farming village, it became sought-after by hikers and skiers after Mary Shelley and Byron waxed lyrical about the sublime views. They weren’t wrong, either. As part of the Jungfrau region, spectacular trails come as standard on a walking holiday to Wengen – and arriving is half the adventure. Wengen is only accessible by the trains that run from the Lauterbrunnen valley below. Once here, you’ll find yourself amongst wooden chalets and 19th-century belle époque hotels, a cable car that climbs up to the paths and panoramas of Männlichen mountain and mountain trains further into the Jungfrau region.

Wengen may be small, but it’s brimming with charm and has been welcoming adventurous visitors for centuries. Wooden chalets, belle époque hotels, and cosy cafés give the village plenty of character, while its souvenir shops are stocked with cuckoo clocks, handmade pottery, and edelweiss-embroidered tablecloths. Boutiques cater to walkers, and the food is hearty – think herby soups, mushroom ravioli, spätzle, and strudel piled high with cream.

For some summer fun, there’s mini-golf, a giant chess board, a wooden marble run, and a scenic outdoor pool. For a change of pace, hop over to chocolate-box Mürren or take a gondola across Männlichen to reach the glacier village of Grindelwald. Nearby Interlaken is livelier, with plenty of shops and restaurants, lake cruises, and panoramic views from the Harder Kulm.

There’s plenty to keep the whole family entertained in and around Wengen. Challenge the kids to a round at Lauberhorn Crazy Golf, an 18-hole course that playfully follows the famous downhill ski run – a fun and competitive way to see who can score that elusive hole-in-one. Up in Männlichen, the Alpine Herdsman’s Playground is a dream for younger visitors, with trampolines, climbing frames, swings, and a giant cow-themed slide. Meanwhile, parents can unwind with a drink on the nearby guesthouse terrace while keeping an eye on the action.

Back in the village, the Wengen Marble Run invites you to explore as you go. Pick up a wooden game ball for a few francs from spots like Wengen Tourism or the cableway station, and track your points across ten interactive marble runs dotted throughout the resort.

Wengen has a fantastic network of lifts and mountain railways that make getting around the area really easy.
