The picturesque village of Bovec lies between the mountains and rivers of the Julian Alps on the doorstep of the Triglav National Park, which covers four percent of Slovenia. With the highest peaks of the Julian Alps on one side and the bright-blue River Soča on the other, Bovec is the perfect holiday destination for reconnecting with nature. You’ll recognise the beautiful River Soča as the location for many of the scenes in the 2008 film 'The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian' - it's so blue it could pass as a tropical sea.

Things to do in Bovec

Bovec Soča river watersports

Bovec is situated along the River Soča, known as the emerald river, renowned for its stunning colour and fast flow and ideal for watersport activities like white-water rafting. You can also find calmer areas of the river which are great for paddle-boarding and canoeing. This river is perfect for gentle riverside strolls, which may even take you across tension bridges or down rocky paths.

Drifting along the emerald River Soča in a raft is a wonderful experience that's fun for all ages. Rafting in the Soča Valley is one of those active trips that simply must be ticked off your adventure bucket list. The most popular rafting route on the River Soča is 10 kilometres long and runs from the bridge near Log Čezsoški, near Boka Waterfall, to Trnovo ob Soči.

Older children and teenagers can learn the basics of kayaking in the calm sections of the Soča River. Local instructors offer beginner-friendly lessons to help them build confidence on the water while having a blast.

Soar over Bovec with on a once in a lifetime tandem paragliding experience. Starting in Bovec, you can descend from either Kanin where you can see the Adriatic Sea on a clear day, Kobariški Stol which is the longest mountain ridge in Slovenia, Mangart which is Slovenia's third highest mountain, or Kuk, the highest of the Kolovrat mountains. If you're feeling adventurous book a zip-lining trip and whizz through the Učja Valley; taking you from mountain-top viewpoints and down into the depths of the Učja Gorge.

Bovec village

The Kobarid Museum will teach you about the heritage of the Isonzo Front on a Slovenian, European and a global scale. Unique demonstrations of fights and life during the war, the exhibits, the rich photo material and the multi-vision displays tell the touching story of hard and bloody days next to the River Soča; events once recounted by Ernest Hemingway and Erwin Rommel.

Kluže fortress - this majestic fort above the Koritnica gorge is one of the most visited cultural sights in the Soča valley. It's an important monument to the defence against Turkish invasions, Napoleon's army and attacks during World War I.

Introduce your kids to history at the Ravelnik Outdoor Museum, where they can explore preserved World War I trenches, bunkers, and pathways. The interactive and hands-on experience makes learning about the past engaging and memorable for children.

Enjoy a leisurely ride through the village or take on the mountain passes for more of a challenge. You can put your leg muscles to the test on a mountain bike, or ease your way along on an e-bike. For a scenic ride, the 21 kilometre trail covering the villages of Kal-Koritnica and Čezsoča will also have you ascending and descending Mt. Javoršček for a view of Bovec from above.
