Did you know that the iconic music video for Wham!’s Last Christmas was filmed in the snowy village of Saas Fee – and that George Michael and the entire film crew stayed at the Walliserhof? The year was 1984, and the hotel played host to one of pop music’s most memorable moments, providing the backdrop for what would become a timeless festive classic.

Now, decades later, the team at the Walliserhof Grand Hotel & Spa are bringing those memories back to life. In honour of George Michael’s stay, they’re offering guests a modern twist on some of the singer’s favourite treats and special requests from his time at the hotel. Whether you're sipping on a cocktail inspired by the era, indulging in a dish reminiscent of his preferences, or simply soaking up the nostalgic atmosphere, it’s a playful nod to the hotel’s unique place in music history – and a festive highlight for fans visiting Saas Fee in winter.

Discover Saas Fee

Deservedly known as the 'Pearl of the Alps’ Saas Fee is a beautiful, high Alpine village with an excellent snow record and glacier skiing. It’s sometimes said that the quaint resort of Saas Fee resembles a historic Zermatt – equally charming but with a slower pace of life and a more traditional ambience. The enchanting, traffic-free village is surrounded by a magnificent backdrop of dazzling blue glaciers and towering peaks, including the Dom - the highest mountain located entirely within Switzerland.

The glacial ski terrain is both picturesque and wild. It is a truly stunning resort to ski in, explore, and admire the view. Families will appreciate the friendly atmosphere as well as the fantastic, large beginners’ area in the village centre. There is also plenty of entertainment to keep you occupied off the slopes, from the state of the art Aqua Allalin pool and spa complex to the Feeblitz bobsleigh/rollercoaster.

What is Christmas without Whams! Last Christmas? The music video was filmed in various locations across Saas Fee, you can venture around the resort and look for some of the iconic filming locations. If you want to stay where George Michael and the film crew stayed when they were shooting the music video, check out the Walliserhof Grand Hotel & Spa.

Things to do in Saas Fee

Allalin

Revolving Restaurant Allalin is one of the world's highest revolving restaurants, at 3,500 meters above sea level, you can enjoy regional dishes with views of seemingly endless mountain peaks. In one hour the restaurant revolves 360 degrees around its axis, providing you with an astonishing, ever-changing view while you're enjoying regional and international dishes

Known as the steepest toboggan lift in the Alps, the Feeblitz Rodelbobbahn combines the thrill and excitement of both bobsleigh and a rollercoaster. Essentially a toboggan on rails, as you descend the mountain you can reach speeds of up-to 40kmph!

This exciting activity is great fun for all the family and makes an excellent afternoons entertainment, especially if the weather isn’t ideal for skiing. The Feeblitz Rodelbobbahn is open every Wednesday to Sunday from 1pm until the early evening.

The mysteries of the Allalin are revealed in this fascinating ice grotto cut deep into the glacier. As you wander the corridors of the ‘ice palace’ you’ll stumble upon incredible ice sculptors carved into the walls, including grotesque faces representing traditional masks worn during the Lötschental ‘Tschäggätta’ carnival.

Visitors to the Ice Pavilion can go beyond the ethereal and explore the science of the mountain. An avalanche simulation lets you experience what it would feel like to be in a landslide and exhibits reveal information about the glacier.

With its extensive glacier providing year-round opportunities to attempt this exciting sport, Saas-Fee is an excellent destination for ice climbing enthusiasts. Beginners can also obtain an excellent introduction to climbing techniques using both indoor and outdoor climbing facilities as well as the excellent ice climbing instructors.

Every Thursday evening a torch lit walk takes groups through the romantic woodlands of Saas-Fee to the village of Gletscherdorf for a candlelit fondue dinner. Along the way you’ll encounter extraordinary, magical views. To get involved with this atmospheric experience you will need to register before 6pm on the Wednesday. Speak to your rep for more details.

Swap your skis for a pair of skates and whizz around the ice on the natural ice skating rink in the centre of the resort. Alternatively have a go at curling, one of the oldest winter sports.

Fly down the 5-kilometre descent into Saas-Fee from the top of the Hannig. Be sure to have your cameras ready as the panoramic view is spectacular. You can also rent a headtorch and go down the run under the moonlight.

Winter Walking

For the non skiers, there is around 60km of winter hiking trails in Saas Fee. Enjoy walking through the magical snow covered landscape and marvel at your surroundings.

In the Furggstalden ski area above Saas-Almagell, you will find the childrens adventure land, where there are a variety of family fun activities including snowtubing, kids skidoos (pay locally. Approx 5 CHF), a mini igloo and a slalom track.
