Saariselkä's popularity in Lapland stems from its breathtaking Northern Lights displays, extensive winter activities like husky safaris and snowmobiling, and authentic Sami culture. Its appeal lies in offering unforgettable Arctic adventures amidst stunning natural landscapes.

With Inghams you'll have a choice of hotels, apartments and cabins in the center of Saariselkä. They're all close to the ski bus stop providing easy access to the downhill ski resort. Saariselkä is also known for its cross-country skiing with tracks starting right from the center of town. So although our accommodations are not ski in/ski out, you'll be in a great position to access downhill and cross-country skiing during your stay.

Saariselkä offers a range of winter activities such as skiing, reindeer and husky sleigh safaris as well as snowmobiling and snow shoeing! On holidays during November and December you'll even have the chance to meet Santa.

Yes, you can pre-book the Visit Santa's Home excursion, for your chance to meet Santa Claus in his Arctic home. This is available for everyone travelling before Christmas.

The local history of Lapland is very interesting and it is worth understanding the Sami Culture in particular. The Sami are the indigenous tribes of Lapland. You can visit museums to hear stories about their legends and tales. Not far from Saariselkä is the Gold Museum.

Ylläs is known for it's unspoiled natural beauty surrounded by the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. Split into two areas either side of the Ylläs ski fell, Äkäslompolo (the main village) to the north and Ylläsjärvi to the south.

The Saaga Hotel and Apartments are in a great location beside the Ylläsjärvi ski slopes. Our accommodations in Ylläs are located on either side of the ski fell, which can be reached using the local ski bus (payable locally). The main village of Äkäslompolo is to the North and Ylläsjärvi is to the South.

You can try a range of winter sports in Ylläs - from skiing and snowboarding to exciting winter activities like husky sledding, reindeer safari and snowmobiling. Explore the trails of the National Park on cross-country skis, snow shoes or even by e-bike.

Take a reindeer safari to meet and learn about the lives of local Sami people. The farm we visit has been in the same family for over 200 years and they have a personal Sami museum (7 night guests only). Check out the Yllastunturi Visitor Centre Kellokas to learn about the local flora and fauna and the life, history and traditions of villagers in the area. It also has an art gallery which hosts travelling art exhibitions of Finnish artists.

The key to keeping the cold out is layering, and we recommend lots of layers that can be added and removed to control body temperature. Base layers can be thinner and tight to your skin to absorb any moisture from sweat. Middle layers should be somewhat baggy to trap air and create heat. Merino wool is one of the best materials for insulating and is naturally moisture-wicking. Other suitable materials for base layers include polyester.

It’s absolutely fine to wear your normal winter clothes whilst travelling, but we do recommend taking a big warm coat for when you arrive in Lapland, though you won't be waiting long to be whisked off to your accommodation.

All the restaurants, cafes and bars in our resorts know that it is cold outside, so they keep their establishments nice and warm, therefore your normal winter outfits you would wear at home are perfectly fine - however, do remember you will need to wear warm, thermal clothing outside.

You might perhaps consider ski goggles.

Yes. This is the most efficient way to obtain clothing for this trip as these may not be something you already own and may not be something you use again. Therefore hiring your base layers is not only the perfect solution but it is also more environmentally friendly. Inghams Lapland is in partnership with EcoSki who are a fantastic ski clothing company who hire out items of all styles, sizes and fashion. Read more about EcoSki on how they started and why it makes sense to rent. They offer everything from Thermals, Fleece Jackets, Salopettes to hats and gloves so you can source everything from one place for all of your travel group.

Our log cabins and apartments are individually owned. They come in a variety of different shapes and sizes and have been decorated to the owner’s taste. All cabins/apartments come with an equipped kitchen and are either walking distance or a short bus ride away from a well-stocked supermarket. Most have a private sauna, fireplace, dishwasher, washing machine and Finnish drying cupboard. Approximately half our cabins have WIFI. Most cabins have a TV with local channels, some of which are in English. Cabins do not have safes. Christmas trees are not typically provided as standard. Details about individual cabins can be found on the properties’ page on the Inghams website. Final cleaning is included in all stays. Cabins should be left in a tidy condition (bins taken out, dishes washed, linen piled, etc.) Any damages should be reported to the in-resort team. If you lose your key or lock it inside the cabin you will incur a maintenance charge.

Provisions are not provided as standard (e.g. soaps, cleaning products, toiletries, food items, tea/coffee etc.) To reduce waste and save costs, you may wish to bring some of these items with you. A limited amount of toilet paper and firewood is provided. Extra can be purchased locally. The tap water in Lapland is safe to drink. It comes straight from the ground and is arguably the purest in the world.

Like most of Europe, beds are typically ‘Austrian Twin’ style – two single beds which can be separated or pushed together. Most cabins have 1-3 twin bedrooms plus ‘extra beds’. ‘Extra beds’ vary by property – typically, they are mattresses or small beds on a mezzanine, or a sofa bed in the living room. It is common in Finland for beds to be made by guests on arrival.

Instructions on how to use saunas, fireplaces and appliances can be found either stuck on the wall or in a cabin information book. You will receive tips about recycling, heating, water-use and departure cleaning when you arrive. If you are unsure about anything, please contact your in-resort representative who will be able to assist.

Headtorch / torch, reusable shopping bags, reusable water bottles, toiletries and other provisions, hairdryer (if not provided - see individual property pages), normal loungewear (it might be warmer inside the cabin than you expect!), slippers / slipper socks, cards / board games, Christmas decorations and Internet roaming package.
