Discover Wengen

The idyllic village of Wengen is high up on a sunny, sheltered terrace with spectacular views, dominated by the magnificent trio of peaks – the Eiger (Ogre), Mönch (Monk) and Jungfrau (Maiden) – which provide a spectacular backdrop to Mürren and Wengen, and in part to Grindelwald. You'll arrive in this charming, friendly village by scenic mountain railway as it has reduced traffic, although you'll spot a few electric vehicles around.

Home of the famous Lauberhorn downhill race this area is a skiers paradise. With the Jungfrau whole area pass you'll have access to skiing and boarding in Wengen, Grindelwald and Mürren ski areas, on the other side of the Lauterbrunnen Valley.  Take the cable-car from Wengen village centre, which links to Grindelwald’s ski area or take the mountain railway to the Kleine Scheidegg where both ski areas meet. Whatever your ski ability, you'll have the chance to enjoy the expanse of slopes and beautiful scenery. If skiing and boarding's not for you or just fancy a few day's doing other winter activities, take advantage of the amazing winter walking and sledging network. Pre book a non-skiers pass and use the lift and rail network to link the sledge runs and hiking trails.

More about Wengen

Things to do in Wengen

Sledding

Wengen has a range of picturesque sledging routes, with one of the most popular being the 4.5km track that descends from the Männlichen top station to the village. Another great sledding spot is Kleine Scheidegg, where you can race down the Fox Run, located next to the Lauberhorn race course. For those seeking the longest sledging adventure, a trip to Grindelwald is a must. You can experience the thrilling Big Pintenfritz, a 15km run starting at Faulhorn and winding its way down to Grindelwald.

Swap your skis for a pair of skates, and enjoy whizzing around the ice. The village’s charming rink is perfect for skaters of all levels, with beautiful views of the surrounding mountain peaks. The artificial open air ice rink in the centre of Wengen is open from November (subject to weather conditions).

Snowshoe

With around 100 kilometres of well-marked hiking trails across the Jungfrau region, you wont have to walk the same trail twice. There are a number of trails around Wengen, however we recommend heading up to Kleine Scheidegg where there is a variety of trails to suit different levels. Be sure to pre-book your non-skiers walking pass before you travel.

Head up to the 'Top of Europe' at the UNESCO heritage site of the Jungfraujoch and Aletsch Glacier, located at an impressive  3,454 metres, for incredible views across the region. Whilst you are up there, make sure to check out the Ice Palace where there is a variety of ice sculptures to marvel at.

Schilthorn

The brand new Schilthorn cable car is one of the most spectacular cable car journeys in the Swiss Alps. It connects the village of Stechelberg, deep in the Lauterbrunnen Valley, with the summit of the Schilthorn (2,970 metres), passing through the mountain villages of Gimmelwald, Mürren, and Birg along the way. The cableway has an impressive gradient of 159.4 percent - climbing 775 metres in just four minutes.

This cable car route includes some of the steepest ascents in Switzerland, particularly on the final section between Birg and Schilthorn, where passengers are lifted swiftly up sheer rock faces to reach the summit station. The journey is divided into four dramatic sections and offers panoramic views of snow covered peaks, deep valleys, and cliffside villages.

Once at the top, the summit of Schilthorn, offers panoramic views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. You may also recognise the revolving Piz Gloria restaurant, made famous by the James Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service.
