Beginner skiing and snowboarding in Montgenèvre

Montgenèvre is a fantastic place to learn how to ski and beginners are really spoilt for choice. The main beginner areas are purposeful and varied. Visit the Gondrans section of the resort for the best nursery slope which also has a fenced off moving carpet and draglift for a stress free introduction. There's also some great breezy green runs in the area as your skills improve. It is a perfect choice for families and the snow record here is impressive, with ideal conditions and perfectly groomed slopes throughout the season.

Intermediate skiing and snowboarding in Montgenèvre

The area is ideal for intermediates to build confidence and cover significant distances. It offers varied skiing both above the tree line and through the trees, especially to Claviere from Pian del Sole. The black runs in the Chalvet sector are inviting for the confident intermediate skier. The terrain is diverse and the open bowls and long groomed runs allow intermediates to explore the whole of resort.

Advanced skiing and snowboarding in Montgenèvre

Montgenèvre is well catered for advanced boarders and skiers who prefer freeriding rather than down hill skiing. However, there are some good red runs to carve up and cruise down. Over half of the terrain is made up of red and black runs so there'll be plenty of options for you to choose from if you do want to just hit the slopes.

Snow parks and off-piste skiing in Montgenèvre

Snowboarding is also well catered for, with a good choice of wide pistes and varied terrain. Advanced riders have the opportunity to ski some real unspoilt off-piste areas. We suggest you hire a guide who can show you some fantastic hidden runs and don't forget it's also possible to arrange heli-skiing on the Italian side of the border. There is also a snow park located next to the green slope of the Sagnes - thanks to it's green and blue level, the snow park is also accessible to beginners! Here you'll find 5 boxes, 5 natural snow jumps and 2 freestyle lines.

Cross country skiing in Montgenèvre

The tracks are the perfect place to appreciate and enjoy the snow and beauty of the resort away from the hustle and bustle. There are two dedicated area for cross country skiing: Montgenèvre 1,860 and Les Alberts 1,400. The loops are maintained and groomed by cross country enthusiasts so expect only the best.

Discover Montgenèvre

Proudly sat at the gateway between France and Italy, Montgenèvre boasts French charm with an Italian flair. Don't let the 300 days of sunshine fool you, its high altitude skiing above the cross-border pass has one of the best snow records in France and the Monts de la Lune lift pass also covers the resorts of Claviere and Cesana in Italy and two days skiing the Milky Way. Getting over to Italy couldn't be easier with the new Rocher De Aigle gondola,  the new gondola seats ten and is three times shorter than the previous chairlift. Ninety-five percent of the former chairlift has been recycled; the cables, stations, and electrical equipment were repurposed in Montgenèvre, while the pylons and seats were sent to other ski resorts in France.

Spot the abandoned fortresses from the peaks of Les Gondrans and peer over to Italy from the summit of the Col Saurel. With wide and uncrowded pistes, this area is an excellent choice for beginners and advanced skiers alike, plus the new Durancia spa, Monty Express toboggan and great value mountain restaurant Les Terrasses all add to why we feel now is the time to holiday in Montgenèvre.

It's no surprise that the majority of bars and restaurants across resort have Italian and French influence. There are more than a dozen restaurants in Montgenèvre, catering for all budgets. Le Capitaine is a great choice if you're fancying some Italian cuisine without travelling far and has a great pizza selection. La Ca del Sol serves up traditional French mountain meals such as fondue. La Table Blanche is the go to if you're fancying a gourmet dinner. There are plenty of options to choose from and of course there is the potential for many more if you ski over into Italy, where you can pit stop for a delicious lunch.

Montgenèvre is on the quieter side, and you'll find a lot of the bars here offer a relaxed 'sit down and socialise' atmosphere. Le Jammy and Refuge are some firm favourites and attract the crowd straight from the slopes. However, if you are looking for a party after a long day of cruising the mountains, the resort does have a nightclub called Blue Night Disco which gets lively at the weekends.

There are a variety of shops across resort including a range of supermarkets, souvenir shops, clothes shops and bakeries and delicatessens. If you fancy tasting some of the local specialities, we'd recommend the popular Boulangerie L Atelier bakery for some fresh bread or Le Chalet des Gourmandises for some sweet treats. If you're looking to treat yourself to some memorable winter gear, you'll find a selection of ski shops across resort that sell ski and snowboard equipment as well as fashionable clothes, for example Sport 2000 and Sunvalley. There are also traditional shops selling trinkets and souvenirs so you can take a piece of the resort back home with you.

Many of our properties have spa facilities available but if you like to dedicate a whole day to pampering yourself, we'd recommend visiting the Durancia spa. This new balneotherapy space is in a sumptuous setting and has relaxation and wellness at the centre of its design. Some of the spa facilities include whirlpool beds, jacuzzis, a counter-current river, saunas and hammams as well as a range of beauty treatments and massages available from professionals. There is also an over 18s well-being area with some exclusive facilities like a salt mist cabin and outdoor Onsen pool heated to 36°C - simply perfect with the surrounding snow. Embark on the Durancia experience and treat yourself to the ultimate relaxation.

During the winter season, Montgenèvre comes alive with a unique blend of arts, culture, and festive events. The village's heritage is showcased through landmarks like the Fort du Janus and historic chapels such as Saint-Roch and Notre Dame des Sept Douleurs, which are beautifully accented by snow. The highlight of the season is Les Jeudis de la Lumière, a weekly celebration featuring lantern-lit descents, captivating light shows, and live DJ performances that illuminate the slopes. Cultural festivities extend to the Montgenèvre Jazz Festival, where visitors can enjoy live performances amid the snowy landscape. Traditional celebrations, like local markets and festive gatherings, bring warmth and vibrancy to the winter chill, making Montgenèvre not just a ski destination, but a cultural experience enriched with Alpine charm.

FAQs and Travel Advice

Montgenèvre is set on the French-Italian boarder and has plenty of quieter slopes. This area is often uncrowded due to the fact it is part of the Milky Way ski area, so skier and snowboarders are spread out across the vast 400km slopes.

One of the smallest resorts in Europe, Filzmoos has around 13km of pistes. It is not far from some larger resorts if you do want to seek out more hustle and bustle, however if you are looking for a smaller, easier ski resort then this is the perfect place.

Livigno is high on the list when is comes to affordability due to the fact it is a tax-free region. Which is great news for us skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts - with classic Italian pizzas & pastas at a lower price for the same quality.

Mont Tremblant is one of the lower altitude ski resorts that can be found - this is ideal if do not enjoy the weather conditions at higher altitude and if you are a beginner skier looking for the more gentle or laidback slopes.
