Beginner skiing and snowboarding in Banff
Every winter, Banff's national park turns into a playground for beginner skiers and snowboarders. Standish, located in Banff's Sunshine Village, contains the most novice-friendly slopes, with some lovely long green trails. The beginner slopes located in Mt. Norquay are also perfect if you're looking to find your snow feet and consist of gentle green runs that will help you build confidence on the mountain. Although it is a relatively small beginner area, you'll find the pistes are not as crowded as the other two ski areas. Not only that, but Mt. Norquay also offers incredible views of Banff town and the surrounding Rocky Mountains, so you're in for an all round treat.
Ski schools in Banff
Whether you're looking to learn, or refine your existing skills on the slopes, Banff offers ski schools that can cater for all ages and levels. You'll benefit from experienced instructors whose top priority is getting you to master the basics at your own pace. As there are three ski areas, speak to our staff for advise on where is best based on your ability.
Intermediate skiing and snowboarding in Banff
If you're an intermediate skier, you're in for a treat. Sunshine Village is known for it's incredible views and provides a variety of intermediate terrain. Lookout Mountain and The Monarch best suited to your needs. Lake Louise is set amongst the trees and you're in for some great scenic routes through the woodland. Mt. Norquay provides access to a handful of good intermediate slopes and worth a visit.
Advanced skiing and snowboarding in Banff
Mount Norquay packs a considerable punch with nearly half of it's piste considered to be black diamonds and double blacks. We'd recommend making a pit stop at some point to attempt the 'Black Magic' black diamond run - the steepest groomed pitch between the three areas and one of the steepest groomed runs in Canada. In Banff Sunshine you could lap Goats Eye for hours, taking on the extensive black and double black runs. The back bowls of Lake Louise are not for the faint hearted and will leave you wanting more!
Off piste and snow parks in Banff
Banff sunshine village provides some of the best powder skiing in Banff. The sunshine village can received up to nine metres of snow throughout the season and uses only 100% natural snow - no need for snow canons. One of Banff's sunshine village highlights includes the Delirium Dive - named as one of the top 10 off-piste destinations in the world.
If you're craving adrenaline and looking to pull off some tricks, Banff's terrain parks have you covered. Divided into four distinct zones, these parks cater to riders of all abilities, ensuring no one is left out of the fun. Elbow Park is perfect for beginners wanting to learn the basics of jumps and tricks in a relaxed setting. Up from that is Triple Bridge Park. This area steps up the challenge for intermediates, featuring more jumps, rails, and varied terrain to practise on. Next is Boulevard Park before heading up to the top level and taking on Easy Street Park. Despite its name, this park is crafted for expert riders, featuring the most demanding stunts and challenging runs in the park.
Cross country skiing in Banff
Cross country skiing is a great way to explore Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies during the winter months. A vast network of classic and skate skiing trails provides plenty of options for all fitness levels. Banff, Lake Louise and Castle Junction trails are track-set and groomed regularly, giving you the choice of leisurely loops or more demanding routes. Pack a lunch, grab your gear and choose your ideal trail.

Our accommodations in Banff
Discover Banff
Banff is a dynamic town set in the spectacular Banff National Park. Whilst skiing is core to Banff's winter appeal, the town is host to many other popular winter activities, you can enjoy everything from dog-sledding, snowshoeing and relaxing in hot springs in one of Canada's most beautiful and oldest national parks.
Banff provides home-base to three distinctive ski resorts, and a triple area SkiBig3 lift pass covers all three - Mt Norquay (10 minutes drive), Sunshine Village (25 minutes drive) and Lake Louise (45 minutes drive). A regular and free ski bus service, included with your pre-booked lift pass, operates from our Banff hotels to all three ski areas.
Mount Norquay is often referred to as Banff’s 'local' hill but the resort should not be under-rated. It has easy trails but also some challenging ones too, such as Memorial Bowl, Temptation and Lone Pine. Sunshine Village has some of the highest skiing in Canada. It has three mountains: Mount Standish (with some of the easier trails) Lookout Mountain (high above the tree line with views across the Great Divide) and Goat’s Eye (with some of the best tree skiing on its lower slopes). Lake Louise offers one of the largest ski areas in North America with over 4,200 acres of skiable terrain. New terrain and chairlifts are continually being added to this beautiful area renowned for its jaw dropping glaciers, lakes and forests.
If you ski or snowboard all three (known as the Trifecta Challenge), along with bragging rights, you'll be rewarded. Stop by the SkiBig3 Adventure Hub on Banff Avenue and collect your reward which includes a FREE pint of beer for your efforts!
Banff is a lively town with over 130 bars and restaurants. From casual après-ski spots to gourmet experiences showcasing regional ingredients, the town caters to all tastes, budgets, and occasions. Whether you're craving fine dining with panoramic mountain views, a cosy pub with local craft beer, or a trendy cocktail bar tucked into the heart of the Rockies, Banff's food and drink scene is as diverse as its landscapes.
Try some local craft beers at Banff Ave Brewing Co. They offer a great selection of drinks, some brewed on-site using pure glacier water. To top things off, there’s a solid menu of pub classics that hit the spot after a day outdoors.
High Rollers is a really fun evening spot for a game and a drink. Hit the ten-pin bowling alley or challenge your mates to a few games of pool. There's a wide selection of drinks and some great snack food on offer.
If you're looking for a bit of class, head up to the Fairmont Banff Springs and enjoy a touch of sophistication at Rundle Bar. Our recommendation: the signature Rundle Bar Gin cocktail, made in collaboration with Wild Life Distillery.
Many hotels have their own in-house restaurants, but if you're after some standout local Canadian food, hit up The Bison. Located in downtown Banff, the restaurant focuses on farm-to-table fare—highlights include locally raised bison, wild mushrooms, and creative vegetarian dishes, all served with panoramic mountain views from the dining room or patio.
Ready to get the party started? Banff is brimming with fantastic spots to kick off your après experience, and where better than the town's oldest bar, The Rose & Crown Banff. If the sun's out, head up to the rooftop patio to soak in the stunning mountain views. This iconic venue is famous for its live music, craft beers, and handcrafted cocktails, with the party often carrying on into the early hours.
If catching the game is more your style, The Elk & Oarsman is the place to be. This local favourite is where people gather to watch the NHL, NBA, and NFL. For the Brits, don't worry, ask nicely, and they can usually find the English Premier League matches and possibly even the Six Nations. With screens dotted all around the bar, you won’t miss a moment of the action, unless, of course, a 101oz beer tower blocks your view.
As the night rolls on, you might feel the urge to hit the dance floor or belt out your favourite tunes. Melissa's has you covered. By day, it serves up mouth-watering steaks, but by night it transforms into Banff's largest live music venue. With live bands, DJs, and the ever-popular karaoke nights, the fun kicks off around 9pm and keeps going strong until 2am.
Banff’s shopping scene is as vibrant as its mountain views, with Banff Avenue serving as the main hub for everything from outdoor gear to locally crafted treasures. As you wander down the bustling street, you’ll find a blend of boutique stores, souvenir shops, and well-known outdoor brands.
For those looking to bring a piece of Banff back home, there are plenty of options. Local artisan shops feature handcrafted jewellery, woodwork, and unique home décor that capture the spirit of the Rockies. Rocky Mountain Soap Company is a must-visit for its all-natural, handcrafted products, perfect for gifts or a little self-indulgence.
If you’re after something truly Canadian, keep an eye out for local maple products, indigenous art, and cosy Canadian-made clothing. Many shops also carry beautifully designed postcards, prints of the Rocky Mountains, and Banff-branded apparel that make for perfect souvenirs.
Travelling is the perfect opportunity to rejuvenate both body and soul, especially in Banff, where majestic mountains, serene lakes, and untouched wilderness create a landscape that inspires tranquillity. Amongst the vibrant townships and peaceful forests, you’ll discover countless ways to unwind and reconnect with nature.
Take the cable car up Tunnel Mountain for a breath-taking sunset view over the town of Banff, or find a quiet spot along the Bow River to relax with a book. For a deeper sense of calm, join a yoga or fitness class set against the stunning mountain backdrop. Indulge in a soothing spa treatment or immerse yourself in the blissful warmth of the Banff Upper Hot Springs, a natural thermal spa where mineral-rich waters ease your muscles and refresh your spirit.
Whether you’re absorbing the stillness of the forest, stargazing beneath the crystal-clear skies, or soaking in the healing waters of the hot springs, Banff offers the perfect setting to relax, rejuvenate, and renew.
Banff was established in 1885 as Canada’s first national park and the third national park in the world. It began with the discovery of natural hot springs on Sulphur Mountain by Canadian Pacific Railway workers in 1883, which led to the area being protected as a 26-square-kilometre reserve. This grew into what is now Banff National Park, covering 6,641 square kilometres in the heart of the Canadian Rockies. The town of Banff itself was incorporated in 1990, but its roots trace back to the late 19th century. With such a rich history, there plenty of places to visit.
